Clubs


Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities are an important part of the total school experience offered here at Saint Joseph School. There are over 27 clubs or activities offered, including the following:


A Capella Singers

Open to students in grades 5-8. This group will meet during lunch recess on Mondays to rehearse in the music room. They will perform in the Christmas and Spring concerts. Director: Ms. Cara Zakian


Altar Servers

Altar Servers perform a very important and much-needed role of assisting in liturgical services; so that the priest can focus on leading everyone present through the Word, prayer and Holy Sacrifice of the Eucharist in the Mass. Any student (grades 4 - 8) wishing to become an altar server and who have already received First Holy Communion can join and serve. You will have the chance to serve at the 8:30 AM weekday Mass (6th - 8th grades) during the school year and year-round at the Sunday Mass (4th - 8th grades). Any intereseted student may sign-up at the Club Fair on October 10th and take home a Youth Altar Server permission form. Parents complete the from and the student returns the form to the classroom teacher. Father Anthony will provide training where altar servers will learn about preparing and serving on the altar during Mass. Art Class

Studio Art willmeet on Thursday afternoons in the art room from 2:45 - 3:45 pm. This year's class will be comprised of several mini-sessions, each focusing on a single project which will have its own cost and age requirements. For example; groups will be organized with grades 1 - 3 and grades 4- 8, with a class size limit of 15 students per session. Each session will last approximately 2 - 5 weeks. A master list of mini-sessions will soon follow and classes will begin 1/3/2019. Director: Mrs. Sherry Dennehy


Athletics

Team try-outs will be announced for boys and girls basketball and track and for cheering. There are a variety of team levels, with cheering and basketball beginning in grade 3 and track beginning in Kindergarten. Please watch the weekly E-News newsletter for further information. (All these teams include students from the parish as well as students from St. Joseph School.)


Beta Club

Invitation only honor society for students in grades 7 & 8 who demonstrate leadership qualities, good moral character, academic excellence and who wish to provide service to their community. An induction ceremony is held in the fall semester of the school year. Beta Club members are responsible for coordinating and participating in various fundraisers throughout the year and setting a positive example for the school. Meetings are held monthly from 2:45 - 3:15 pm in the Upper School Spanish classroom. *Additional meetings can be scheduled as needed. Advisor: Senora Adrienne Zuccaro


Board Games of Strategy

Open to students in grades 3 & 4. Problem solving skills developed through hands-on experiences in a fun-filled environment with board games. Club will meet the second Monday of the month from 2:50 - 3:30 pm in the third grade classroom. Moderator: Mrs. Jane Quigley


Chess Club

Would you like to learn the game of chess or improve your chess skills? Then the chess club is for YOU! Club meets Mondays from 2:50 PM - 3:50 PM. The goal will be to hold chess matches against other schools. Sign-up now and bring your "A" game! Students will experience 10 - 15 minutes of basic chess theory followed by games for 45 minutes. Advisor: Mr.. Marcel Hart


Choir

Open to students in grades 3 - 8. Students in choir wil provide music for all school Masses and the 9AM Sunday Mass; the first Sunday of each month. Rehearsals are held every Thursday afternoon, from 3:00 - 3:45 PM, in the Upper Church. Attendance at rehearsal is required in order to participate in events. Director: Mr. Monroe Quinn, Parish Director of Music. Assistant: Mrs. Cara Zakian, School Music Teacher


Drama Club

Open to students in grades 4-8; limit 25 per session. This group will meet every Tuesday, from 3:00 - 4:00 PM. Students will be exposed to the various elements of Drama, including pantomime, improvisation, dialect, character identification, costuming, make-up, etc. The culminating event will be a full length production in the winter and a second production in spring 2019. Extra rehearsal times will be scheduled as each performance approaches. Director: Ms. Brielle Babiar, Mr. Frank Langan & Dr. Valenti


Early Childhood Reading Club

Students in grades Pre-K through grade 1 will meet the first Monday of every month from 2:45 - 3:15 pm in one of the Pre-K classrooms. The club begins January 2019. A different author will be chosen every month. Students will get to read a story from that author and a craft as well. Moderators: Mrs. Ana Rossig & Mr. Frank Langan


Fitness Club

Join the St. Joseph School Fitness Club! Students will enjoy building fundamental skills such as: speed, strength, flexibility, agility and endurance. Fitness is the pursuit of complete, well-rounded physical competency that will help performance with all sports. Class is limited to 20 students. Meetings begin October 15th in the Lower School gymnasium from 2:45 PM - 3:30 PM. Advisor: Ms. Dominique Cutro


Golf

Open to students in grades 4 - 8. Participants will work on the basic skills of golf; learning the game, the approach and etiquette of the sport. Meetings will be in spring 2019 in the Lower School gymnasium and possibly outdoors (weather permitting). Director: Ms. Dominique Cutro


Literary Magazine

This club will meet on Tuesdays at 3:00 pm. Staff membership is open to grades 6 - 8. Submissions are open to grades 5 - 8. Writers, artists and designers are welcome. This club requires a commitment to writing, editing, and publishing print media. The club will meet in the Language Arts classroom of the Upper School. Director: Ms. Brielle Babiar


Martial Arts Program

Open to students in grades K - 8. This program is designed to give students an understanding of how to develop a strong mind and body through Martial Arts training. The class meets every Wednesday in the Gym, from 3:00 - 4:00 PM.

Math-tastic Club

Open to all students in grades 3 - 4. This club is a perfect opportunity to review classroom material and reinforce core concepts. The club meets every other Wednesday from 2:50 - 3:30 pm in the 4th grade classroom. Director: Mrs. Jessica Valdes


Math and Reading Club

Open to students in 1st grade. This club gives students time to play games that reinforce Math and Reading concepts such as adding, subtracting, money, time, beginning and ending sounds, sight words and rhyming words. The group will meet monthly from 2:45 PM - 3:15 PM on the second Friday of themonth. Advisor: Mrs.Maureen Asaro


Mythbusters Oradell

This club will meet two Mondays per month in the Upper School Science Lab from 2:45 - 3:30 pm. Students will perform existing experiments and or brainstorm ways to improve experiments or come up with experiments that have not yet been done. Director: Mr. Withers


Poetry Club

Open to students in grades 5 - 8. Students will learn a variiety of poetry styles and technuques. Students will compose, compare, read and share their original poetry. Poetry is the "game," and fun is the "aim!" This club will meet in the Social Studies room of the Upper School from 2:45 - 3:15 pm the first Monday of each month. Director: Mr. Paul Juszcyk


Rosary Prayer Group

Open to all students in grades 1 - 8. The Grades 1 - 4 group meets in the Lower School Music room every Wednesday from 2:50 - 3:30 pm. The Grades 5 - 8 group meets in the Jackson Room of Mary's Chapel on Thursdays from 2:50 - 3:30 pm. Rosary beads are provided but students are encouraged to bring their favorite rosary and any special prayer intentions. Moderators: Mrs. Pat Fekharzadeh & members of the Legion of Mary


Junior Robotics Team

This STEM education team is part of the FIRST LEGO Team league and is open to 10 students in grades 7 & 8. The team will meet most Saturdays in August and the Fall and other days as needed to prepare for competitions. All meetings will be off campus, at one of our local Catholic High Schools. The league participation fee is $175; plus $75.00 lunch fee.

Scouting

Scout groups are available for both boys and girls beginning in Kindergarten. If interested, please contact the school office for more information.


Trivia Club

Students who enjoy questions (asking/answer) on a wide range of topics will enjoy this club! No prior experience is necessary. Open to ten (10) students in grades 5 - 6 and meets on the first Thursday of each month in the Upper School grade 5 classroom from 2:45 - 3:15 pm. Moderators: Mrs. Nicole Caraballo


Yearbook Club

Open to students in Grade 8 and a limited number of students in grade 7. This group meets on Wednesdays in the Upper School computer lab from 2:50 - 3:30 pm. The group requires a dedicated commitment from each member and attendance is mandatory. Additional meeting times may be required as deadline approaches.
